The brilliant people of SIMPSON GUMPERTZ & HEGER rose far above the average during TAKING THE MYSTERY OUT OF THE SUBSURFACE training. First-time and thoughtful questions peppered the entire day, and talking through the origins of questions led to meaningful answers. For example, what is the proper procedure for describing soil color when the soil is positioned in the "OU" Weathering Zone (that is in the Oxidized Unleached Zone, above the water table) and dry in the natural state?
What a thoughtful question!
Other great questions included, Why did Casagrande create a separate soil classification for fine-grained soil when the plasticity index is between 4 and 7?
And another, What makes 'Well Graded Sand' and 'Well Graded Gravel' so unique to geotechnical properties? The origin to that question was predicated on the fact that for a coarse-grained soil to qualify as "well graded", it must satisfy the requirements of both the Coefficient of Uniformity and the Coefficient of Curvature - even for field classification. And, so how does that impact our field classification?
Again, what great questions!
